A choice of who provides services is better for patients

NHS WiFi launched in Bury GP practices

Patients in Bury are some of the first in the country to be able to access free WiFi at their GP Practice.

Patients registered with a Bury GP Practice can now access free WiFi whilst waiting to be seen or when visiting their Practice.

Free WiFi will allow patients to connect to the internet using digital devices including tablets and smart phones, paving the way for future developments in digital patient care.

Patients can use the free service to access and download health apps, browse the internet and look up health and care information, whilst  keeping in contact with friends and family more easily, improving their overall experience.

Free WiFi in NHS buildings is part of a national move following patient feedback to improve the use of technology in the health service, allowing patients and staff alike the ability to access the services they need. The project has been funded by NHS England and delivered by NHS Digital and Bury is one of the first areas in the country to launch the service.

WiFi in GP Practices also enables patients to learn more about the benefits of signing up to online services with the help of  ‘Digital Champions’ available in each Practice. Signing up to online services allows patients to book and cancel appointments, order repeat prescriptions and view parts of their health record at a time and place convenient to them.

Dr. John Hampson, local GP from Greenmount Medical Centre said: “Introducing free WiFi in our practices is an important step towards future developments in digital patient care.”

“Not only will patients be able to access information about local services and download health apps when waiting to be seen in their practices, they can take advantage of the knowledge of our Digital Champions who are poised to help patients sign up and reap the benefits of online services.”
