No appointment needed for walk-in service

Experienced nurses are available at Prestwich Walk-in Centre every day of the week to offer advice and treatment for a wide range of minor illnesses and injuries.

Open every day from 8am until 8pm, the Walk-in Centre service located on Fairfax Road Prestwich, is run by experienced nurses from Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.  Patients can just walk in with no appointment needed.

The service is an alternative choice for anyone who can’t get a same day appointment at their own GP practice, when they are suffering from an ailment, illness or injury that needs assessing quickly, but isn’t serious enough to require a visit to A&E.

The team can provide advice and treatment for a wide range of minor illnesses and injuries including cuts and small wounds; coughs, colds and flu-like symptoms; rashes and sore throats; urinary tract infections and muscle and joint injuries, including strains and sprains.  The team includes nurses who can prescribe some medications if required, for example to treat an infection (not repeat prescriptions).

As a boost to the service, until the end of March 2014 the team has been joined at peak times each day by a GP who will be available to assess and treat patients with more complex minor illnesses and injuries.  Having a GP available at peak times will reduce the need for patients with more complex problems to visit another NHS service, whilst encouraging patients to use the Walk-in Centre, rather than A&E, for minor conditions.

Louise Palmer, Service Co-ordinator for Urgent Care Pathways, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust (the organisation that runs the Walk-in Centre) said:  “Our service is ideal for patients who need a quick assessment, but their condition isn’t serious enough to warrant a trip to A&E.  Many people attend A&E with relatively minor conditions, and we want to remind people that Prestwich Walk-in Centre offers fast access seven days a week without an appointment.”
